1. Minoan Bull Leaping Ring

Of the three bull leaping paintings, this is my favorite. The scene without the palace in the background seems most realistic. And I think it’s important that it features both female and male athletes. Source: Epic of Man, a book put out by TimeLife. This is the painting I’d like to model the scene off of.

I like this painting because it shows the leap in mid action.

I like this painting because it shows what the full leap may have been like (according to the Minoan paintings). It seems as if the athletes grabbed the bull’s horns and used them to leap on his back and then off. (Wow!) This seems to be a bit different from the bull leaps of Spain (who leaped over the bull–see video below).

Problems for the Minoan Bull Leaping Ring scene:

  • The Bull:Build (or rent) a fake bull on wheels, cover it in a green screen, pull it, and have a gymnast leap summersault over it. Maybe like in this video:
  • Gymnastics over the bull:Hire Gymnast and Stunt Choreographer? The Gymnast (and Spotters) must be Mediterranean as the Minoans were Mediterranean. The stunt might look like this:

  • The green mountains in the background:Film Outside where mountains are in the background for real. Maybe somewhere like the Acton Fairgrounds(in Maine)? There are mountains in the background at these fairgrounds (although CGI might have to be used for Mediterranean type trees and mountains?) But is it realistic to rent part of a fairground? And how much would it cost? Would it be better to film somewhere that’s free? Where would that be?
  • The dirt:Film Outside–again a Fairground has places where there’s dirt.
  • The fence:Build fence as seen in the first of the bull leaping paintings above.
  • The audience watching:Hire extras. Cost? How many extras?
  • The costumes:Make the costumes. Cost? How many costumes?
